Free templates often need 10–20 hours of cleanup: fixing CSS bugs, removing outdated jQuery, making mobile-responsive.
Most free templates require visible attribution links. Removing them violates the license — clients won't want competitor links on their site.
Free templates built in 2018-2022 often break on modern browsers. Safari bugs, CSS grid issues, JS deprecations.
When something breaks, there's no support, no documentation, no update. You spend hours debugging other people's code.
| Scenario | Free Template | HTML template |

| Cleanup / bug fixing (15 hrs × $50/hr) | $750 | $0 |

| Mobile fixes | $200–$500 | $0 |
| Client-ready quality | Extra polish needed | Ready to use |
| True cost per project | $750+ | One-time template cost |
